The Mercure George Hotel, Reading, is recognized as the oldest building in the city, dating back to at least 1423. Once a major coaching inn on the route between London and the West Country, it retains many original features including Tudor archways and a cobbled courtyard. This hotel combines historical charm with modern amenities, situated centrally near landmarks such as the Museum of Reading and the Oracle shopping center. Its distinctive architecture contributes to the cultural fabric of Reading.

Reading Train Station is a 10-minute walk away, providing convenient transport links. London Heathrow Airport is located approximately 28 miles from the hotel. Guests can access the on-site car park via Queens Road, although current road closures on Duke Street may impact travel routes.

Rooms

Stylish bedrooms at the Mercure George Hotel feature private modern bathrooms with free toiletries and hairdryers. Each room comes equipped with tea and coffee-making facilities as well as a flat-screen TV for guest convenience. Some areas of the hotel have uneven floors, which may present challenges for guests with mobility issues. Original timbers can still be seen in the main entrance, enhancing the historical ambiance of each room.

For those seeking Italian fare, the Prezzo restaurant offers a menu that emphasizes high-quality seasonal ingredients, including pizzas, pastas, and salads. 8.0/10

My stay at the hotel was a mix of positives and negatives. The rooms were clean and big enough, ensuring a comfortable stay without being affected by road noise. However, my room was located above the kitchen extractor fan, making it noisy even with double glazed windows. The service was incredibly helpful, with friendly staff going above and beyond to assist. The location was convenient for exploring the city but could be noisy due to its central position, with the hotel providing earplugs for guests. The dining experience was a bit overpriced compared to other options nearby, but the food quality was excellent. Overall, my stay was pleasant with a few drawbacks to consider.

7.4/10

The hotel is centrally located in Reading, close to the train station and the town center, making it convenient for exploring the area. While the room had some issues like a hot radiator and noise from outside, the friendly and helpful staff and the peaceful atmosphere despite the central location were highlights of the stay.

My stay at the hotel had its ups and downs. While the location was very central and convenient for my needs, the noisy rooms and disappointing dining options brought down the overall experience. The service was warm and welcoming, and the facilities were decent.

Rooms
5.0
The rooms were very noisy, and it was hotter than hell. I could hear other guests talking, using the bathroom, and even outside noise from a club playing music late into the night.
Service
6.0
The service was warm and welcoming, but I was disappointed that essential facilities like toilets were not available or blocked. However, the staff did cook me a perfect fries egg on the second try.
Location
8.0
The hotel's location was fab and very central, right in the middle of town, which suited my needs despite the inevitable noise in such a bustling area.
Dining
5.0
The dining experience was poor with limited choices, expensive and without waiting staff presence. I wish there was more clarity and a better variety for the price paid.
Facilities
6.0
The facilities were basic and nothing extraordinary, but they served their purpose adequately.
